Lovina Louie’s TEDx Talk, “Native Americans: We Shall Remain,” addresses the issue of diversity in today’s society. Diversity in the presentation is addressed by highlighting the historical and modern problems faced by Native Americans. One problem that is discussed about the Native Americans is the historical trauma. Louie recounts the challenges faced by Native Americans, including their removal from ancestral lands and also the loss of lives due to diseases brought by European settlers. The speaker also expresses her concern over the cultural assimilation practices in schools. Another problem highlighted in the presentation is the invisibility and misinterpretation of this population. Louie critiques the widespread assumption that portrays Native Americans as a vanished people solely associated with Thanksgiving dinner.
These problems are pertinent to today’s culture. For example, Louie’s presentation effectively captures the importance of understanding and respecting different cultures in today’s culture. An important takeaway in the discussion is the importance of storytelling. Louie’s personal story and use of traditional songs create a strong emotional connection with the audience. This strategy allows the audience to have a deeper understanding of the human cost of historical injustices. Storytelling is impactful because it allows the audience to connect emotionally with the experiences of another person. This emotional connection strengthens empathy and understanding, which bridges a gap across cultural divides.
I learned several things after watching the presentation, including the importance of respecting every culture and embracing diversity. I also learned about the history and culture of the Coeur d’Alene tribe and the challenges they faced due to colonization. I realized that they are making more efforts to regain their identity. Louie was skilled at critical thinking since she critically analyzes historical narratives where she challenges the dominant narrative surrounding Native Americans. She encourages the viewers to examine historical accounts and recognize the ongoing impact of historical trauma. Historical traumas can have an adverse impact on people. For instance, historical trauma on Native Americans has led to the disruption of traditional family structures and parenting practices. The intergenerational connections have been affected due to the forced removal of children from their homes to attend boarding schools (Garcia, 2020). These practices contributed to the loss of traditional child-rearing methods and healthy bonds within families.
However, I have a few questions for Louie. The first question is, “How can we address the historical trauma experienced by the Native American communities?” The answers to this question would address the lasting impact of oppression and colonialism. It would also bring up a discussion of practical ways to support healing through reparations or culturally sensitive mental health resource initiatives. Another question that the presenter should answer is, “What specific actions can individuals take to promote cultural understanding and respect for diversity in their daily lives?” the question emphasizes individual responsibility in creating a more inclusive society. It would also encourage the viewers to reflect on their own biases and take steps such as supporting businesses owned by Native Americans. They could also take proactive activities such as engaging in cultural events to educate themselves on indigenous histories.
The information provided in the presentation provides an understanding of cultural differences and fosters respect for diversity in today’s society. Louie encourages the viewers to move beyond stereotypes and recognize the richness and diversity of Native American cultures. Individuals can foster a more respectful and inclusive society by understanding the historical and modern challenges faced by this population. The presenter also shares the history and traditions of the Coeur d’Alene tribe. She shares the tribe’s way of life, including their connection to the land and songs. Sharing a story involving the cultural traditions of a specific tribe helps the viewers to understand the cultural differences among different cultures.
